I was in favor of the city hall bond ballot proposition for two reasons. Reason one is that our city debt is relatively low, and when the bonds would be issued they will take the place of retired debt. This is why the city manager is truthful in saying that the issuance of these bonds will not increase our city taxes - the debt load (I&S is the technical term) in the budget would remain the same. The second reason is that our city hall has needed updated for many years, even when I was on Council for 5 terms starting back in 2004. I saw first hand the condition of the building that is not a good reflection on our city. At one time the motto of our city was "Proud and Progressive". I think the term "Proud" can have negative connotations to some, but it made more sense as I got to know the people who supported this motto. The Progressive term, however, did not fit the mindset of those who approved and supported this city motto at the time. It expressed a future hope, but there is a faction in the city that sees local business control of municipal power as the only way to that dream of a progressive city. Some of these business leaders have shown their true colors by their actions over time and business practices that are known by many in the community, which is a big reason why they are fighting against this needed initiative of a city hall, and misrepresenting and twisting the Mayor's and the City Managers statements. In short, it is their loss of power that compels them to work against the best interests of this city and its citizens in my opinion. This proposition actually implements the "Progressive" part of the former "Proud and Progressive" motto that was replaced some years ago with "A Place To Call Home".
